Albert John was born 1889 at Sidlesham, Chichester, the son of tannery worker (leather finisher) William Welcome, and his wife and Esther.
In 1911 he was a domestic gardener living with his family at 50 Orchard Street, Chichester. He married Eleanor Butcher at Guildford in 1914.
He then became the head gardener for Sir William Stirling Hamilton of Woodgaters, Shipley Road.
At the time of Albert's death Eleanor was living at 8 Royal Oak Road, Woking Surrey
Albert's brother William was awarded a DCM
